.um is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for the United States Minor Outlying Islands. These islands consist of Baker Island, Wake Island, Palmyra Atoll, Midway Island, Kinman Reef, Johnson Atoll, Jarvis Island, Howland Island and the Caribbean island of Navassa Island. The majority of these islands are uninhabited but a few of them have military and civilian inhabitants.
In December 1997 the .um domain was delegated to the University of Southern California's Information Sciences Institute (USC/ISI) with the Administrative and technical contacts designated to the United States Domain Registrar (USDR), also at USC/ICI.
During 2006 the UM domain was a "lame delegation" and towards the end of the year, USC/ICI declared that they no longer wished to continue administering the domain and appealed for the delegation to be removed. The servers were repaired at the end of 2006 so they were no longer lame.
On the 16th of January 2007 the board of ICANN passed the resolution to remove the delegation of the .um domain and return it to unallocated status. This action was given the support of the US government. Any future plans to reallocate the UM domain must be approved in advance by the United States Department of Commerce.
The full details of the revocation of the UM domain can be found on the IANA website at http://www.iana.org/reports/2007/um-report-10jan2007.html.
At present the .um domain is an unallocated ccTLD.
