.ng was introduced in 1995. It is operated by MIRA, the Nigeria Internet Registration Association.
The Board of NIRA is set to position .ng as the premium domain in Africa and one of the top world domains.
.ng has numerous amounts of second level domains (SLDs), of which are:

The registration for a Nigerian domain name is restricted to Nigerian citizens of the age of majority and permanent residents. Also included are:
- Local Corporations
- Diaspora Corporations
- Foreign Corporations
- Registered Groups
- Trade Unions
- Government
- Educational Institutions
- Trade-marks (domain name must include the exact word component of the registered trade-mark)
Organizations are limited to only one registration for a Nigerian .ng domain.
Requests for Nigerian domains will be processed on a first come, first serve basis. The time it takes for NIRA to pre-process a Registration Request will vary depending on how an Applicant's Registrar sent the Registration Request.
Applicants may choose between a registration period of 1 to 5 years for the domain name.
Applicant must advise his/her registrar on the period selected.
The 3LD (third level domain) may only contain thirty-seven characters, of which Roman letters (a-z), western digits (0-9) and hyphens (-) are included. The first or last character may not be a hyphen, and there has to be more than one character. Furthermore, NIRA does not offer Internationalised Domain Names ("xn--") currently. 3LDs not following these rules are rejected.
NIRA has the right to reject any domain name for any reason whatsoever. NIRA also has the right to cancel or suspend any Registration without 30 days of the date of the Activation of the registration in the NIRA registry. Futhermore, a Registration may be canceled by NIRA within 7 days of the Activation of the registration.
On May 13, 2009, IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) completed the process of re-delegation of the .ng domain name to Nigerian authorities. With the re-delegation, the technical contact for the .ng domain name is now the local Nigerian DNS Administrator, while the Administrative Contact is the president of NIRA.
