The activities of the ccTLD ".it" Registry are developed by the IIT-CNR (Istituto di Informatica e Telematica of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche)
".it" is also the English word it, and because many words end with -it, it is commonly used for the construction of domain names, such as sh.it, sk.it, or sp.it.
The ccTLD ".it" Registry provides its services for Internet Service Providers which need to sign a contract with the ccTLD ".it" Registry, so in order to be able to register directly under the country code "it" a paper based application has to be made.
The role of the ccTLD "it" Registry is held by the CNR due of technical and scientific skills acquired in the field of network services, recognised by Internet Assigned Naming Authority (IANA).
There are a number of reserved second-level domain names, for example domain names like italy.it or other names that are referring to geographical regions of Italy. gov.it is the official governmental domain, and its use is increasing rapidly.edu.it domain has been investigated, but its proposal was never formalized.domains in the form commune...it and commune..it are reserved to Italian municipalities.domains in the form provincia..it are reserved to Italian provinces.domains in the form regione..it are reserved to Italian regions.

The following name regulations applies to an "it" domain name:
• The maximum length for a domain name is 63 characters

The service of maintenance of the domain name is tacitly renewed from year to year, unless rescinded, the request for which must arrive at the Registry by and not beyond the 15 days following the annual expiry. However please note that its strongly recommended to keep a close eye on the duration of the contract that the registrant has with its ISP.
