INRegistry is the official .IN registry.
It was appointed by the government of India, and is operated under the authority of NIXI, the National Internet eXchange of India.
In December 2005 NIXI took over the management of the ".in" domain from C-DAC. At that time, C-DAC still sponsored domain name registrations however on the 23 January 2006 the C-DAC was no longer responsible for managing any .IN domain names. C-DAC's registrants were asked to transfer their names to new registrars of their choice.
Applications are submitted through a accredited registrars and a domain name may be registered for a minimum of one (1) year, and a maximum of ten (10) years. Domains automatically renew the expiration date.
The table below shows the second level domain names that are currently managed by NIXI.
Unlimited registrations are available in these subdomains and anyone in the world can apply for one since there are no nexus or other qualifications needed:

| .org.in | |
| .firm.in | |

| .ind.in | Individuals |
The following table shows subdomains that are reserved for qualified organizations in India.

If you wish to register a name under the ".in" domain make sure that the name meet the following criteria:
• Domain length: .IN domain names may be between 3 and 63 characters in length.
• Allowable characters: Only letters, digits, and hyphens will be accepted in a domain name.
Names cannot begin or end with hyphens.
The registry plans to accept IDN (International domain name) registrations in the future, this will include IDN registrations in tamil, hindi and other Indian languages. Until further announcements, no applications for IDN domain names are accepted. Domains with hyphens in the third and fourth positions will be rejected due to the punycode.
It should be noted that registrants may transfer their domains to any registrar. Registrar-to-registrar transfers are not allowed in the 60 days following the creation of a domain name and a registrar-to- registrar transfer adds one year to the term of the domain name, charged to the gaining registrar.
Registrars may therefore charge the registrant for the domain year.
The INregistry gives owners of registered Indian trademarks or service marks an opportunity to protect their marks by applying for .IN domain names before the general public gets the same opporunity. This is called the sunrise policy, The Sunrise will give preference to Indian citizens and companies over entities from abroad.
All one-character and two-character domains, are reserved by government and NIXI order, and are not available to the public.
